Collecting Memories, 2017
Croatia, July 2017
While on the road, all I could do was collect sounds, objects, images, and memories of the people I met. Judgments and opinions felt far away. Even if I had wanted to use them, my mind was simply free of them. The performance titled Collecting Memories was a meeting between the artist and a person invited to take part. I shared a recording of my voice in which I described how I deal emotionally with the topic of war. This recording was mixed with sounds I gathered during my journey: insects, sea organs, and a boy band playing on a Saturday night in a coastal Croatian town. The person sitting across from me received this sound collage and was invited to listen to it for seven minutes while posing for a portrait. Each portrait was meant to include an object. The guest could choose from several items: semi-precious stones, a showerhead found in the villa of Josip Broz Tito, a passport, or a small mirror. When the audio finished, the guest was given the chance to see the completed drawing.
